New Roof: Before & After

Right after we moved into our new house, we replaced the roof.  Over the holidays, I finally got around to taking a picture of our house with the new roof.  If you remember, there were two sticking points that made this a very difficult decision.  First, we were told that roof vents needed to be installed on the front side of our roof.  To read more about our roof vent quandary, go here.  We decided not to install roof vents on the front side of the roof and restrict them to the backside only.  The second sticking point was the shingle color.  I went back and forth on this one and if you remember, I even did a mock up of the potential colors. I finally picked pewter gray - a dark gray that works well with our exterior house colors.

Before

During

Here is a good picture of the color difference of the shingles.  They had yet to replace the shingles on the shed (old roof) so I took a picture before they did.

After

Our roof with new architectural shingles in pewter gray and no roof vents on the front side of the roof.  Very happy with our decision!

Thank you again for all your help with this decision.  I received a lot of great input that helped us make very informed decisions.  If you're considering installing a new roof, you should read comments from readers here and here.

  3. It looks wonderful! There's nothing quite like good curb appeal, and practical elements like the color of a roof really add to the appeal.

  5. That pewter gray color certainly mixed well with the colors of your house. Probably the black and white colors of the windows and doors made gray a great choice as it brought balance to the whole house.

  6. I love your new roof! It was a good idea to change a different color. Considering the style of your home’s exterior, I think the new shade was able to bring the whole look of the house together. Congratulations on a job well done!

  7. I agree with Noreen that the new color created some balance to your exterior! It made your house more appealing -- it’s as if it’s brand new. Anyway, I hope that you’d take care of your new roof by keeping it clean and by having it regularly checked for maintenance. Congrats!

  8. Good thing that you provided the ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures of the roof. Looking at them, you can really tell the difference. No offense, but your old roof was just plain and boring. The roof plays a big part in the aesthetic value of a house. So, it’s a great idea to get the shingles replaced.

  11. Love the house and I love the roof. I really makes the house look about 10 years younger. I feel like redoing the roof is one of the greatest ways to refresh your home. Painting the shutters and door usually also helps and a little work on the yard can make a big difference. I am sure you are thrilled.
