We drove around town (again) to look at the various color options (our roofers gave a list of houses they've done in the past). It was somewhat helpful; but, just like paint, the color looks so different when there is a lot of light vs. when there is shade. It is hard to know until you see it directly on your own house.
So, I took the color swatches they had online and played around with them in Adobe Illustrator. I realize it isn't a true representation (I still can't get the shingles to tilt in the software - very frustrating). So here are the leading contenders:
Option #1: Oyster Gray
Fortunately, this will be over in a week and decisions will need to be made probably at the eleventh hour! :)
UPDATE: To see the color we chose, go here.

I gravitate toward either of the first two choices. From your mock-up they appear to be fairly similar. Exterior decisions are really tough, aren't they? I was helping my SIL out with some exterior decisions/opinions. They are getting their house painted/shutters/trim. The new colors look great and I know whatever you decide is going to look great on your house.
ReplyDeleteHmmm...from your mock-up, I think the pewter gray strikes the right balance. It has enough contrast without being too stark (like you said the charcoal was). Does your home get a lot of sun? It might be important to consider the amount of sun because the darker the shingle, the hotter the roof will get in full sun.
ReplyDeletepewter! :)
ReplyDeleteLove the oyster gray.
ReplyDeleteSo tough to choose, but I lean toward the two middle-of-the-road choices (oyster and pewter) since they're not too light and not too dark. You're right that they're more versatile if you want to change your house color. Good luck--these are such big decisions!
ReplyDeleteI have to say I like the fox hollow gray! I think it looks the most updated....which is ironic! I like the fox hollow gray and change the shutter color to something fresh and new! good luck! I know whatever you choose will be beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHi Fran. Just catching up on your new home and all of its wonderful outdoor spaces. It is absolutely gorgeous and I cannot wait to see how you make it your own. As for the roof, I normally prefer a darker roof with black shutters, but agree with on going with one of the lighter options this time.
ReplyDeleteHi Fran, I kind of like the Fox Hollow best, but I'm wondering if it's because I've seen pictures of your house previously with a similar roof color? My next favorite option is Oyster. Now I'm going to read all the other comments to see what everyone else said. :) I was trying not to let anything influence my gut!

I like the first two best. They appear so similar that I can't really choose between them.
ReplyDeleteI would say either of the first two will be more pleasing if you decide to repaint and change colors. The Fox Hollow is in my opinion too light. And the Charcoal is definitely too dark. If I had to pick I think I would lean towards Pewter. Whichever you choose will be beautiful I'm sure!
ReplyDeleteWe got a new roof this spring and I was loving the very dark shingles. When we were talking to our roofer...our upstairs gets very warm in the summer and he did let us know that the darker shingle would make the upstairs even warmer! We went with the "weathered wood" color which looked more brown on some of the houses we looked at, but when we got our house painted a dark gray the shingles looked darker on our house. Hope this helps some, it is a very scary, expensive decision!!
ReplyDeletePewter!!
ReplyDeleteI think I like the first 2 the best, but they look so similar on my monitor it is hard to choose. I would go with whichever one is darker because it will fade over time. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI suggest the Oyster Gray color. Why? Well, what I like about it is that it creates a beautiful contrast with your siding – not too sharp, and not too dull – and it also matches with your shutters beautifully. Anyway, have you decided which color to choose?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Fran. The Fox Hollow Gray is more pleasant to the eyes, and it creates a harmony with your full, green yard too. Other than the roof color, you have to decide on the roofing material too. Better choose something that can withstand damage and extreme weather conditions, and can last for years.

Now, honestly, the best and most logical choice to go with would be the charcoal. In contrast with your bright green you want something that can act as a 'base' necessarily for your entire home. This would be the strong, powerful dark shade of your shingles. A bright grey or a midtone grey would not go too great with a white house.

So what color of shingles did you use? If I were to choose, charcoal would be my pick. It would be great to see darker shingles if your home’s exterior is painted with bright colors. It looks better than using gray shingles, especially the fox hollow gray. It has quite the same shade as your exterior.

I wonder what color you chose, Fran. But in my opinion, I think the pewter gray looks good on your house. The color is not too dark or light, which is quite pleasing to the eye. And the good part is you can play around with different wall paints with this shingle color.
ReplyDeleteWell, it does pay to know some skills about editing pictures, right? Good thing you did try to picture all your options, so it would be easier for you to decide. One good marketing tool that roofing contractors could probably use is to have an application on their sites that will allow homeowner to picture their homes with different roofing options. Anyway, were you able to decide already on what color you will use? I hope you update us again! :)

Hey, have you made up your mind as to what color of shingles you'll choose for your roof? I hope you choose the fox hollow gray. It seems perfect with the color of your wall, and it gives your facade a sophisticated look.
