Front Door Style

As we're in the midst of having our house painted (btw, it is looking great!), it has become blatantly obvious that our front door/stoop is in desperate need of a face lift.  So, I have front doors on the brain everything from color, door hardware, lighting, house numbers, door mats, planters and wrought iron railings.  My style?  Think classic with a twist!    Here is one before and after front door makeover that has me inspired.

This makeover is very classic which I like.  Knowing me, I'd add a little 'twist' in here and there (maybe some fire engine red peel off numbers for the door).  But, I do like a lot of things about this make over, mainly the over sized lanterns and the absence of the storm door.

Here in New England, everyone has a storm door mainly because it's energy efficient (especially during the colder months).  Last weekend, with screwdriver in hand, I took off our storm door and I love it!  Now, I just need to convince my husband to keep it that way!

  1. I totally agree about the storm door. That was one of the first changes we made. I love seeing nice wooden front doors and I suppose the higher energy bill is worth it. Did I just say that? Love the lanterns - don't think I have ever seen them mounted on the fluted columns before. I would have almost gone with a larger light above the door with scroll arms. There is one in our neighborhood that I love. http://cottageandvine.blogspot.com/2010/04/drive-by.html (click on the first image to see the light up close)

    Have a great weekend.

  3. The peel-off numbers idea is a great one, that way you can change up the look of your entrance whenever new inspiration strikes.

By the way, I'm a new reader and I love your blog. I hail from Connecticut originally and find myself missing it so much. Thanks for representing a great state!

  4. Oh fun! I have been obsessed with a new door for our house forever, they are so expensive, I keep hoping to find an amazing deal for an antique solid oak number...maybe just a couple hundred bucks? ahhh, and new lighting, and a new paint job, hopefully this fall...it is fun isn't it.

  6. Absolutely, storm doors (while yes, energy efficient) and ugly and unwelcoming! I love the beauty of a wood door, and I so love a painted wood door. Keep us posted. Would love to see the "twist" you bring to your classic! Have a great weekend. PS we will have to get together soon. I am often in CT visiting family.

  7. There are pros and cons to each. We had a glass storm door at our last home and that is a happy medium. You could still see the front door color and it was more energy efficient. Have you considered that?

How fun to have them fire engine red!
