Home at last....

How long I have waited for this day.  Here is our new house.....

Isn't she a beauty?  Well, I'd like to think so if I say so myself.  :)  So, the first order of business when it comes to decorating, of course, has to be the least glamorous (in my opinion).  That would be the roof.

Why does that have to be the first and most expensive design decision I need to make?  As one of my friends said, well at least you'll be able to 'see' the improvement and you won't be spending tons of money on plumbing or electricity (improvements you necessarily can't see).  She has a good point.  The roof has not been replaced since at least 1977.  We almost walked away from the house because of the roof.

So, it is decision time - what shingles to buy and in what color.  I'm going to have to spend some time researching this, but if any of you readers out there have any experience in this...I'm all ears....

The next couple of days I'll be unpacking and getting internet set-up.  I hope you all have a great week!!  My son starts kindergarden this week....I'm so excited for him!

  1. Beautiful house, Fran! Roofs aren't the most exciting, but it will make a great difference. I don't know much, but I always hear dimensional shingles are nice. Maybe a charcoal/dark taupe?

  3. Fran, your new house is just beautiful! I love good classic architecture and a mature yard. We just put a new roof on our house this year after a storm and used the architectural shingles in a charcoal color. It's a little softer than black and the added texture makes a big difference. Can't wait to follow along on your latest decorating journey!

  4. Congratulations (again!), Fran. What a beautiful home. I'm sure you are really looking forward to putting your stamp on the house, even if that starts with the roof!

Though it's not a glamorous change, the new roof will protect all of the pretty improvements you eventually tackle in the interior!

  5. Congrats and how exciting! I nominate Carrie's blog (Hazardous Design) to check out some roofing/shingles info - she's been posting about their exterior paint, roofing, etc. Might have some good stuff for you.

  7. Congratulations, Fran. Yes, she is a beauty. Perfectly classical. And congrats on your son starting kindergarten. What a huge step! :)

Can't wait to see some shots of inside the house.
I remember that Carrie of Hazardous Design did a post on roofing and found some great looking faux slate shingles. That might look nice. But, honestly, I don't know the first thing about roofing or curb appeal!

Oh, I just read Holly's comment and she said the same thing.

  11. LOVE your new house! It is the quintessential cozy family-type home you see in the movies. Can't wait to see how you decorate it...after the new roof, of course. Good luck and congratulations!

  13. I adore this home. I would love to know what area this is in as we are relocating to CT within the month. We are still not sure where to land. Fairfield was our choice at first because of the commute to NYC but now my husband has an offer from a company in Hartford as well. Do you have a realtor you would suggest?

I can't wait to see what you do with this lovely home!
