Your honest opinion, please!

This weekend I need to make decisions of whether to keep some of our furniture pieces;  most of which I've had from my childhood, one being this cedar Lane chest.

Would you keep this or sell this?

If I kept it, I could see it using in either my son's or the new baby's room.  It would be a great storage piece, the top lifts up and I could store blankets, heirloom items, etc.  And, it's cedar lined!

I think I would paint it, definitely get new hardware and re-upholster it, but what is bugging me are the traditional lines of the chest.  I'm not sure if I really love it.  But, it's a great brand and a nice piece.  I'm on the fence.

What would you do?  Don't worry about saying 'sell it' if that is how you feel....you won't hurt my feelings! :)

  1. I think you should keep the chest! I would paint it out in a fun colour and reupholster it. Do something a little funky and put it in one of your children's rooms. I've seen so many really traditional pieces turned really cool this way. You might as well give it a try!

  2. Definitely keep it! I think it's the hardware that is really throwing it off. Once painted and and new hardware with a great new fabric I think you will love it. It's a great chest!

  4. I think you should definitely keep the chest! once you give it a makeover you probably won't even notice the traditional lines as much! you could disguise the back of the chest with pillows too.

  6. I say keep it! Stain it darker- almost black- with a trina turk -ish kind of pattern on top, and more contemporary pulls!

  7. Keep it. Like some others have suggested I would recommend new hardware and fabric and maybe refinishing the piece. It's got beautiful bones and looks like a solid, top-notch piece.

  8. What a great piece. Maybe a lil hardware change, or even just to gray it out? I think once it is painted, you will really see the lines. So cool. Can't wait to see end result if you take on as a project!

  9. I say keep it and change it up! A storage bench is a great piece to have and hides stuff when you need to hide it and doubles for seating. Keep it!

  11. I agree with the others. Definitely a keeper, especially if you give it your magic touch.

    P.S. Stay safe this weekend!

  15. I'm just chiming in now, but I say keep it and refresh it with some new paint, fabric and hardware (just like you said). Give it the "Fran" touch and it will be fabulous.

  16. Well, I think you got enough votes, but I'm with everyone else, Fran! Some bold paint and new hardware could really work some magic. It's a great storage piece, and cedar, and it'd be a shame to lose it!

  17. I have painted lots of old pieces that were way too traditional for my taste. It's always amazing how a fresh colour can breath new life into a piece. A fun colour will definitely do the trick on this beauty.

  18. Gosh I was afraid I would be the only one to say keep it. I really think you would regret getting rid of it one day. Do like my mom and give it to your son and he will have to deal with it when he gets older ;)

  19. I'd hang on to it, maybe use it for storage in the baby's room or even keep it in a closet for a year or so. I'd hate to see you regret the decision. I'm sure you'd have no problem selling it if you were 100% sure it wasn't your style. The style of the piece is Traditional and there will always be plenty of buyers for a piece from a quality manufacturer.

  20. Have to disagree, ditch it and find something you love. You can change the paint but not the lines.

  21. Absolutely keep it! Would be great once sprayed, and you can either loose the cushion or update with some fabulous fabric (either a print or a solid with piping). Looks like the storage piece for a kid's room!
