E's Room - Progress

There are several home projects happening simultaneously, so actually finishing a room has taken longer than expected.  However, there is one room that I am seeing real progress and that is my daughter's room.

Above is my inspiration board.

E has a BIG personality and so I think it is not coincidental that I am gravitating towards a serene room - cream with touches of powder blue, gold and gray.  For evidence of E's personality, see below.

I am secretly hoping that the serene room somehow rubs off on my 2 year old!

No, but seriously, in the early stages of planning her room, I knew I wanted to use a watercolor which was a wedding gift from my mother's family.  It is a picture of her hometown in Trier, Germany (where her family currently lives).  Since my mother is no longer living, I thought this would be a nice tribute to E's Omi since she has always wanted me to have a girl (but, unfortunately, never got to meet E).  So, I pulled the colors from the below watercolor.

I plan on painting the room an off-white.  The final choices are BM White Dove, BM Bone White and BM Cameo White.

The seamstress came last week to take the measurements of her window.  I will be doing a london shade.  For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted a london shade and I think a girl's room is the perfect backdrop to have that feminine touch.  I told the seamstress this is what I have in mind.

The furniture (her dresser and bookshelf) have been bought.  I bought the RH Emelia dresser and an Ikea Hemnes bookcase.

She will have my husband's rocking chair (when he was a little boy) and I plan on making a slip using the blue and white toile fabric (got a great price at a local fabric store here in Louisville).

The only challenge in this design has been her glider.  It a glider that we've had for years.  I was hoping to slipcover it with a scalloped trim.  This was my inspiration…

But, stupid me, I didn't think having a slipcover in a lighter color would not be ideal for a navy blue glider.  The navy blue shows right through.  Since the glider is old, I am thinking of retiring it and buying a new one, but I am on the fence.

While we use the glider daily to read books and snuggle, I worry if she'll continue to use once she gets old enough and can just read in bed??

When she is ready for a bed (she currently sleeps in a crib), I will want her bed to be that perfect antique piece.  But, that takes time, and this is just the start…..

  2. I love your inspiration. The colors, the shade, everything. For the rocker, have you seen this hack? There are several on the internet depending on the type of ikea chair. Cute and cheap - although there is work involved. http://www.mrswigglebottom.com/2011/07/turning-chair-into-swivel-rocker.html

  3. This room is going to be gorgeous! The water color was the perfect place to start. So sweet that you are using your husband's rocking chair. Hoping our sons will both use theirs one day when they start a family.

  5. What a lovely, classic girls room you have planned for you sweet one. I love the serene colors and especially the london shade. And the rug -- oh, I LOVE that rug. Your little E is so cute. Love that she thought to wear goggles in the bathtub. I'm pretty sure that has never occurred to my girls!

  6. What a little ham you have in that bathtub! I love the choices you've made so far, Fran. Clearly the dresser and bookcase will transition with her through the years. Is it possible to sell the glider (say, on Craigslist), then use the revenue for another arm chair for her room?

Really looking forward to seeing the space in the future!

  7. When slipcovering over a darker fabric, use interlining. Good luck!
